Eternal Sanguine of the Sleepless Mind

Working 60 hours a week while being a full-time student at a pretty demanding school can take a lot out of a person. I have been doing pretty well going to bed early as I am usually up by 8 at the latest, often earlier. Last night was one of the cases when that failed.

I ended up going to bed at 1am with my alarm set for 4am. I had a bunch of reading to finish (and I'm a hopelessly slow reader) and a short paper to write on it. Unfortunately, I had been drinking coffee that kicked in around 2am, and found myself in kind of a 1/2 awake daze for a while. I am always greatly intrigued by those states of mind in which I am neither asleep nor awake, as I'm usually giving a completely rational analysis of something based off a completely absurd premise. I don't remember what it was last night, but a week ago, I had devised the whole plan for a paper I was writing on gender studies and Christianity... only it was built around an electoral polling map. (Feminist interpretations of Christ picked up Ohio and Virginia. That was my thesis.)

And today I am kind of all over the place. Nothing really bothers me, nothing makes me very excited... My mind is just floating around, up in the clouds somewhere, ever so sleepy.

I have been known to do really weird stuff while in a sleepless mindset - coming out, coming out again to different people, applying for jobs I have no business applying for, sending out bizarre emails, and coming out. But most of it is very peaceful - even if it is to express a great anger or concern that I had had, the present tense of the mood is always "meh. oh well. lolz. i like kitties."

And thus I think all of our nation's policy decisions should be made when our leaders haven't gotten much sleep. We will do random things, yes, like sending the government of Nigeria lemon-flavored cupcakes, creating a national Zac Efron day, and mandating that all tax breaks be in the form of Outback Steakhouse coupons. But we would never go to war, never legislate hate, and never bother anyone. We would be too sleepy.
