That's the percentage of Americans between 18 and 45 who self-identified as being gay, lesbian, or bisexual in a 2006 U.S. government survey. Which means it's actually probably about 54.1%, if we include the 50% of the population that is Republican, gay, and horribly closeted.
It also profiles the estimated percentage of queer folks by city, metropolitan area, state, congressional district, and reality TV preference (kidding on the last one.) Which is why I am using it to judge how gay cities I may move to are. SHOCKER, Portland and Washington are both super gay. Baltimore is pretty gay too (6.9%) so it passed with flying (rainbow) colors.
